Golden decades of Yugoslav basketball

Djordjevic's three-pointer against Pinturas Bruguer in Istanbul

A player for major games

SCENE ONE: Final match of the Men's Basketball Euroleague in the Turkish city of Istanbul in 1992. The Spanish Pinturas Bruguer was in the lead 70:68 against the Partizan Belgrade only a few seconds before the end of the game. The Partizan team guard Aleksandar Djordjevic hits a three-pointer in the last second, thus bringing his team the title of the European champion!

SCENE TWO: 1995 European Championship in Athens. This was the first major competition game of the Yugoslav national basketball team after the sanctions had been lifted. It was the final game against Lithuania, with some 20,000 temperament Greeks supporting it. In the infernal atmosphere of the Athens Olympic Hall Aleksandar Djordjevic takes over the role of the Yugoslav team leader and scores 41 points (9/12 three-point field goals - fantastic 75 percent!) in the game of his career. Yugoslavia defeats Lithuania with the 96-90 score and wins the European title.

SCENE THREE: 1997 European Men's Basketball Championship eight-finals in Spain. The first game between the Yugoslav and the Croatian national teams. The Yugoslav players were under great psychological pressure during the game, the Croatian ones have nothing to lose and are in the 62-61 with several seconds remaining! Aleksandar Djordjevic is once again the key figure of the match - he hits a three-pointer in the last second from the same position from which he had hit a three-pointer in Istanbul. Yugoslavia has won 64:62.
