Kiev, Ukraine, August 9 - In the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first leg, the Belgrade Red Star drew with host team Dynamo from Kiev 0-0. This score gives the Yugoslav team big chances to qualify in the Champions League provided they give a good piece of play in the second leg match in Belgrade.
The match was off to a slow and scrappy start until in the 17th minute when Red Star Goran Drulic's shot hit the post from Mihailo Pjanovic's pass, before a surprise break shortly afterwards looked to have put Dinamo ahead. Celebrations were
shortlived though as English referee, Dermot Gallagher, ruled the goal out for
offside. But a similar fate befell their opponents soon after as the referee again
ruled that a goal should not stand.
The visitors then continued to dominate the
first half with Ivan Gvozdenovic having the best chance to score only to shoot
over Vyacheslav Kernozenko's goal when well-placed inside the Dinamo
penalty area.
The Ukrainians came out for the second half in a much more determined mood
but continued, Maksim Shatskikh in particular, to fall foul of the offside tactics
employed by Red Star. But Dinamo had a chance to go ahead with a
free-kick in the 60th minute, but Artem Yashkin's shot bounced off the far post
and was swiftly cleared by the Yugoslavs.
The home side came close again in
the 67th minute when a free-kick was awarded following a foul by Stevo
Glogovac, but Dinamo failed to take advantage when Valiantsin Bialkevich's
effort cannoned off the wall. Mihajlo Pjanovic had a chance to gave Red Star a lead in the 83rd minute after Bajcetic's glorious action. Dinamo's best chance of the night came in the 88th minute when a powerful shot from Aliaksandr Khatskevich rebounded off
the far post.
After the match
"We have played excellently major part of the game. Dynamo had several great opportunities in the finish of the game, but our defence reacted extremely well. We managed a favorable score. Dynamo has a good team and we will have to play much better in the return game in order to qualify in the Champions League" (Slavoljub Muslin, Red Star coach).
