Igor Butulija (YUG) shoots over French handball players |
Yugoslav men's handball team qualified for the semifinals of the Olympic tournament in Sydney, after beating France 26-21 (10-9).
Yugoslavia will play against Russia in the semifinals on September 29.
With the better and more confident play, in the most part of the match, Yugoslav handball players deservedly placed among the four best teams at the Olympic.
Yugoslav handball players began with mistakes. They let rival to make series of 4-0, but they immediately respond, so they from 2-5 reached 9-5, and achieved seven goals in line, mostly, thanks to great goalkeeper Arpad Sterbik, who had six saves in a row during that period.
After the equal fight and minimal leadership in the first half time, the real appearance of our team was seen in the continuation.
Phenomenal Nedeljko Jovanovic, captain Dragan Skrbic and Ivan Lapcevic were creators of the great victory.
"I am very happy because we advanced to the semifinals and because of the victory over very good and qualitative rival. This is the success of the whole team, because we all put a lot of effort in order to gain our goals. We had to explode once, because we had many oscillations in the game until now, and I am oversatisfied because it happened at this important match", Nedeljko Jovanovic stated after the match.

Action from the Yugoslavia/Croatia match
|
In the fourth round of the B group of the Olympic water polo tournament, Yugoslav and Croatian team played in a draw tie 4-4 (2-1, 0-0, 1-2, 1-1). Yugoslav water polo players placed itself in the quarterfinals after today's match, and they will play in the last qualifying round against Hungary.
Both teams established game on outstanding defense, so forwards, besides great goalkeepers, did not have many opportunities to stand out. They played very sharp, on the edge of regularity, but without unnecessary roughness.
The curiosity of the match is that neither of the teams, in the period from the end of the first quarter till the middle of the third quarter, did not score the goal.
