Yugoslav volleyball players celebrate their triumph

Yugoslavia beat the Netherlands 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-18, 30-32, 17-15) on Wednesday, to qualify for the seminals of the Sydney Olympic volleyball tournament.

Defending Olympic champions the Netherlands could not surive a similar five-set marathon falling to Yugoslavia.

Yugoslavia, the 1996 silver medalist, used its powerful and well-timed blocking to get past the Netherlands.

The Yugoslavs grudgingly surrendered the fourth game, taking the Dutch to eight games points before losing. On match point, blockers Andrija Geric and Ivan Miljkovic stuffed Dutch hitter Guido Gortzen for the third time in the game.

"I did not expect Netherlands to play so well," said Yugoslavia's Goran Vujevic. "With a little luck, we managed to win. Netherlands deserve to be in the semis."

In the semifinals, Yugoslavia plays Italy on Friday.

Having defeated Hungary 10-9 (3-3, 2-3, 3-2, 2-1) in the last, 5th round, Yugoslavia won the first place in the group B of the Olympic water polo tournament in Sydney.

In the quarterfinal match, which is to be held on September 29, Yugoslavia will play Australia, the 4th team from group A.

As expected, the match with the Hungarians was marked by great, uncertain and fierce battle till the last minute.

Hungary moved ahead 8-6 in the third quarter on Tamas Kasas' second goal. But Viktor Jelenic and Veljko Uskokovic tied it less than two minutes later.

Tibor Benedek again gave Hungary a lead with 5:22 remaining and again it was Uskokovic who drew Yugoslavia even with his inside shot from the right side at 1:20.

A Hungarian turnover sent the ball back for Yugoslavia's last possession.

The Yugoslavs worked the ball around until finding Sapic alone on the right side. He pumped twice and shot it through as the horn sounded.

"We got back in the game after losing by 3 points, and we have never before been able to do something like that. I think that is a great achievement in this moment. Before that, we finally defeated the Hungarians, so we can have calm preparations for the quarterfinal match", Yugoslav player Aleksandar Sapic said.
