Belgrade welcomes Yugoslav basketball heroes (Sept 2002)

BASKETBALL: Predrag Stojakovic, the Sacramento Kings forward, won the 3-point shootout at NBA All-Star weekend (MORE). The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced that Belgrade has been awarded the 2005 FIBA European Basketball Championship for Men (MORE). Having beaten Buducnost Podgorica in final, Partizan from Belgrade won national cup for men (MORE). Dejan Bodiroga of Yugoslavia had 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists, as Greek Panathinaikos, coached by Yugoslav Zeljko Obradovic, beat Italian Kinder Bologna to win the final of the European League. (MORE). Partizan Belgrade won national champions' title (MORE). Yugoslavia took seventh place at the European Basketball Championship for Young Men in Lithuania (MORE). Yugoslavia crushed Canada in final to take first place at the Efes Pilsen Istanbul World Cup basketball tournament (MORE). Yugoslavia's national basketball team finished last at the 2002 Bioptron-Zepter tournament in Belgrade (MORE). Yugoslavia won the world championship for the fifth time (MORE). Yugoslavia took 12th place at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Championship in China (MORE). Yugoslav Basketball Federation will host a 2004 FIBA Diamond Ball for national teams for men, shortly before the Olympic Basketball tournament, it was decided by the Central Board of FIBA in Geneva (MORE). Yugoslavia qualified for the European women's basketball championship which will be held in Greece (MORE). Barcelona's coach Svetislav Pesic has announced he cannot renew his contract with Yugoslav Basketball Federation to coach the national team (MORE).

FOOTBALL Yugoslavia was defeated 1-0 by reigning world champions Brazil in international friendly (MORE). Yugoslavia was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the European Under-17 Football Championship in Denmark (MORE). Having beaten Sartid Smederevo in final, Red Star won national cup (MORE). Yugoslavia took third place at LG Cup in Moscow (MORE). Partizan Belgrade won champions' title (MORE). Former Yugoslav international Vladislav "Bogie" Bogicevic was selected for induction into the United States' National Soccer Hall of Fame (MORE). Predrag Mijatovic and Alessandro Del Piero scored as Italy and Yugoslavia played to a 1-1 draw in the featured matchup of Group 9 in Euro 2004 qualifying. (MORE). UEFA fined Sartid Smederevo for the racist behaviour of their fans (MORE). Yugoslavia beat Finland 2-0 in a Group 9 European Championship qualifying match. (MORE). Red Star and Partizan were eliminated UEFA Cup second round (MORE). France - Yugoslavia 3-0 in international friendly (MORE). Partizan clinched top spot before winter break in the national chmapionship (MORE). Lothar Matthaeus replaced Ljubisa Tumbakovic as a coach of Partizan Belgrade (MORE).

VOLLEYBALL: Jedinstvo tooks 2nd place at the European Top Teams Cup for Women (MORE). Yugoslavia's duo Ivan Miljkovic and Andrija Geric successfully led Lube Banca (Macerata) to the triumph in the European Men's Volleyball Champions' League 2001-02 (MORE). Yugoslavia took bronze medal at the World League final tournament (MORE). Yugoslavia won 4th place at the World Championship for men (MORE). Yugoslavia and Italy will co-host the 2005 Men's Senior Volleyball European Championship, it was announced at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Volleyball Confederation, CEV (MORE).

HANDBALL: Yugoslavia took 10th place at World Handball Championship for Men (MORE). Partizan Belgrade failed to reach Cupwinners Cup final (MORE). Buducnost Podgorica eliminated in the European Champions' League semifinals (MORE). Yugoslav men's national team took sixth place at the World Cup in Sweden (MORE). Yugoslavia finished sixth at the European Women's Championships in Hungary (MORE).

WATER POLO: Partizan Belgrade and Jadran Herceg-Novi reached semifinals in European clubs' competitions (MORE). Yugoslavia took fifth place at the Eight-Nations-Tournament in Nice (MORE). Yugoslavia won Heilbronn-Cup in Germany (MORE). Yugoslav national junior water polo team took gold medal at the European championship for the fourth time in a row (MORE). Yugoslavia captured third place at the FINA Cup in Belgrade (MORE).

MORE SPORTS: Triple-jumper Marija Martinovic took 6th place at European Indoor Athletic Championship in Vienna (MORE). Olivera Jevtic won at cross-country race in Italy (MORE). Snezana Kostic finished eight at World Cross Country Championship (MORE). Aleksandar Karakasevic won silver medal in mix doubles at the European table-tennis championship in Croatia (MORE). Jelena Dokic took her fourth career title with victory at Sarasota Tennis Open (MORE). Geofrey Kinyua of Kenya and Romania's Rodica Chirita winners of the 15th Belgrade marathon (MORE). Ivan Kolic won a gold medal at the World Aeromodelling Championship. Olivera Jevtic snatched sixth place at the World Half Marathon Championships (MORE). Jelena Dokic won the DFS Classic final (MORE). Andrija Zlatic took silver medal at the World Shooting Championships (MORE). Jelena Dokic moved to her career-high fifth place in WTA rankings (MORE). Olivera Jevtic won sixth place in the women's 10,000 meters at the European athletics championship (MORE). Jelena Dokic, partnering Kim Clijsters, triumphed at the JPMorgan Chase Open in California (MORE). Driver Milos Pavlovic won the Italian Formula 3 Championship. Yugoslavia won three medals at the 16th World Karate Championships (MORE). Olivera Jevtic was tested positive for a banned substance ephedrine prior to the 2002 New York City Marathon (MORE). Mara Kovacevic and Milos Mijalkovic won gold medals at the 16th World University Judo Championship in Novi Sad.
