HANDBALL:
Yugoslavia in the semi-finals of
the World Handball Championship

Firm Yugoslav defence: Jovanovic (right) and Venta (Germany)

Cairo, June 11 - Yugoslavia qualified for the semi-finals of the 16th Men's World Handball Championship as it defeated in Cairo tonight, Germany 22-21 (10-12).

Having qualified for the semi-finals, Yugoslavia has secured direct participation on the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney.

In the match of two equally strong teams, the Yugoslav players showed all their qualities. The firm and aggressive defence was the main characteristic of the Yugoslav team, while in attack its players were scoring goals after patiently made up actions.

Having achieved two-goal lead after the first half-time, the German team immediately scored a goal at the beginning of the second half. It seemed that they would celebrate the victory. However, the balance was established after Matic scored from the seven meters and then Skrbic scored too. By the end of the game, the result was equalized six times.

When the result was 21-21, the Yugoslav goal-keeper Sterbik hinted the Yugoslav triumph after defending the Schwartzer's kick. Twenty seconds before the end of the game, Jovanovic scored a goal, thus culminating a very good playing of his team mates. The Yugoslav team managed to halt the last attack of the opponent and preserve the minimal but valuable victory.

In the excellent Yugoslav team, the best were Jovanovic, the scorer of the decisive goal and assistant of several others, accurate Perunicic, energetic Skrbic, goal-keeper Djordjic who defended excellently in the second half and thus prevented Germans to make the more tangible goal difference, and Matic who scored six times out of six from the seven meters.

In the semi-finals Yugoslavia will play against Sweden.
