BASKETBALL:
Winning is the most important

Bodiroga (right, Yugoslavia) scores over Daneu

Pau, France, 26th June - The best basketball players of Yugoslavia qualified tonight for the quarter-finals of 31st European basketball Championship, defeating Slovenian national team in its first match in Group E by the score of 71:66 (29:33).

Tonight the Slovenian national team that in any element of the play was not equal to the current European champion, maximally used its only trump-card in that duel, i.e. its fighting spirit, and thus made the finish of the match uncertain.

Obradovic's experience
determined the winner

The Yugoslav national team entered into the match relaxed and that was utilized by highly motivated Slovenians who led almost the entire first half-time, even with ten points in a moment - 22:12 in 13th minute.

Only seven minutes of excellent game at the beginning of the second half-time was sufficient for Yugoslav players to make a series of 17:2 and start to lead with it seems unachievable 46:35. At that moment nobody expected the dramatic situation in the match finish.

Namely, the former Yugoslav national team member Jurij Zdovc scored few consecutive points, while in the other hand, Yugoslav basketball players started repeating their mistakes from the first half-time, and thus Slovenians reduced the score to 52:50 in 34th minute.

The uncertain fight lasted till the very end of the match, but the extensive experience of Danilovic, Bodiroga and Obradovic determined the winner.

Tomorrow, on 27th of June, Yugoslavia will play with the Spanish national team.

Location: Hall in Pau. Attendance: 6,000.
