First gold in new year

Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, January 5 - The Yugoslav national handball team beat tonight in the finals of the 15th World University Men's Handball Championship the former champions, the Hungarian team 34-25 (18-10) and won the first gold medal in this competition.

From the very beginning, the players of the Yugoslav team selected by coach Zoran Zivkovic, played firmly in defence and efficiently in attack. Therefore, already in the 8th minute, they were leading 4-0. The Hungarians were facing lots of difficulties to penetrate the strong defence of the hosts. Even when they did, their kicks were stopped by excellent goal keeper Sterbik who had eight defences in the first 11 minutes.

Kokir and Petric were merciless in the attack, particularly Petric who scored seven goals. Carried by the loud support of over 4,000 spectators, the Yugoslav players were constantly increasing the result difference which was nine goals in the 22nd minute 14-5. The first halftime finished 18-10.

At the beginning of the second halftime, the players of the Yugoslav team had a drop in their playing. The Hungarians reduced their lead to 15-19. Coach Zivkovic asked for the time-out to calm down the players and recover their concentration. After this break, Kokir, Lapcevic, Nikolic and Tomic started playing as they know, so that in the 50th minute it was 28-20. Practically the title was won, and the fans already started celebrating.

The Yugoslav player Ratko Nikolic was proclaimed the best player of the 15th World University Men's Handball Championship.

The best scorer is also Nikolic with 46 goals.

The best goal keeper is Arpad Sterbik (Yugoslavia).

Portugal won the fair-play trophy, while the Yugoslav referees Nebojsa Grkovic and Rajko Imbronjev were the best referees at 15th World University Men's Handball Championship.
