Becej new European
water polo champion!

Becej, Yugoslavia, May 27th - After beating Mladost Zagreb 11-8 in the final match of the Fina-Four tournament of the Champions` league, Yugoslav Becej, for the first time in their history, became the champion of Europe in water polo.

Yugoslav champion beat the sevenfold European champion for the third time this season, showing that, if they remain in more-less the same squad for the next few years, the title of European champion would not change the owner soon.

Aleksandar Sostar

Becej was superior in all segments of the play, which was confirmed by the fact that players of Mladost managed to score only 2 goals out of 13 extra-man situations! In the team of new European champion, Aleksandar Sapic with 5 goals, Aleksandar Ciric who was good in defense, Veljko Uskokovic, who scored 2 goals in important moments, and of course, experienced goalkeeper, Aleksandar Sostar who defended almost scored shots, were the best.

Mladost threatened Becej for the last time in the middle of the second quarter lessening the advantage to 3-4, and after that there was only one team in the pool. Becej soon led with 8-3, then with 10-4 and 11-6. Until the end of the match, Mladost managed to gain only an honorable defeat.

Sapic: "We are the best!"

Aleksandar Ciric,
MVP of the Final-Four
tournament

"I knew why I came often to Becej. First-class team, excellent conditions. That was a great challenge for me and therefore it is understandable why I was so happy because everything had ended this way", (Zoltan Kasas, Becej coach).

"We played more relaxed than against Splitska Banka and we showed how much we knew. We played with lots of imagination and showed once again that we were the best. After all, we did not lose a single match this year", (Aleksandar Sapic, Becej player, the best scorer of the Champions` League).

"We knew that we had to give 1000% of our abilities in that game. "Becej" had become a first-class team even earlier, and today they showed they were ready for the title of European champion. Naturally, I am personally very happy, and in my career I accomplished what not many sportsmen in the world can be proud of", (Aleksandar Sostar, Becej goalkeeper and captain).

"I am excited for being part of a generation that gathered 6 years ago in Becej and celebrates today. I thank my team players, I thank everyone who contributed to this accomplishment", (Aleksandar Ciric, MVP of the Final-Four tournament).
