Sinisa Mihajlovic

Lazio's Sinisa Mihajlovic is under legal investigation for racist comments made towards Arsenal's Patrick Vieira, according to reports in Italy.

The incident occurred in the controversial Champions League clash between the sides in October, and as a result of his actions, the Yugoslav defender earned a two-game UEFA suspension.

Although the controversial Yugoslav made a public apology for his remarks after the match played in Rome's Olympic Stadium, his antics have forced the Italian police to launch a legal investigation, according to Italian newspaper the Corriere della Sera.

It is the first time that such an action has been taken in Italian football and if convicted Mihajlovic faces a maximum sentence of three years in jail.

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said police should stay out of football after reports that Lazio midfielder Sinisa Mihajlovic could face a jail sentence over his Champions League bust-up with Patrick Vieira. "I prefer things to remain in the hands of football's authorities and I can't see why the police should get involved," said Wenger. "I don't think somebody should go to jail if someone says something in the heat of a game.

"My personal opinion is that legal action should not be taken, but I think the decision rests solely in the hands of Patrick Vieira. I don't really know what happened during the game or that the police has got involved."
