Dokic wins Toyota Cup

Jelena Dokic shows off the trophy after winning final

Tokyo, JAPAN, September 23 (Reuters) - Youth overcame experience on Sunday as third seed Jelena Dokic thrashed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-4 6-2 in the final of the Toyota Princess Cup on Sunday to win her second title of the year.

The 18-year-old Yugoslav had too much power for fifth seed Sanchez-Vicario, breaking the Spaniard in the fifth game and going on to take the first set in 37 minutes behind a flurry of passing shots at Tokyo's Ariake Colosseum.

A wrong-footing forehand pass gave Dokic another break at the start of the second set and, after saving two break points in the fourth game, the world number 11 broke Sanchez-Vicario again with a drive volley from mid-court to go up 5-2.

The 29-year-old Sanchez-Vicario, a four times grand slam champion, fought to three break points in the eighth game, but Dokic saved all three with two crunching forehands and her fourth ace of the match.

Dokic completed her victory moments later, blasting another forehand down the line on her first match point after just 69 minutes on court for her second career title after the Italian Open in May.

Sanchez-Vicario contributed to her own downfall with a string of unforced errors while Dokic, who finished runner-up to Monica Seles at the Brazil Open last weekend, went about her business with ruthless efficiency.

"I've always struggled not being patient with her. I was nervous because I really wanted that second title, but once I got going I was fine," said Dokic, who has won her last three matches against Sanchez-Vicario, all this year, after losing her first three.

"It was just a matter of being patient. I'm stronger physically and mentally this year and more mature as a player."

Sanchez-Vicario, whose world ranking has slipped to 19, blamed herself for the defeat.

"I don't think she won the match. I lost the match. I know she's going to go for it, but I gave her a lot of free points and that cost me the match," she said. "For me Dokic is playing exactly the same as last year."

The crowd of 8,379 observed a minute of silence before the final for the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington on September 11 which led to the withdrawal of four American players, including Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Seles.
