Olympic flame at the stadium in Solt Lake City

Salt Lake City, US, February 8 (agencies) - US President George W Bush opened the 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. The opening ceremony was spectacular including an emotional tribute to those who died in the terror attacks on 11 September.

More than 50,000 people stood in silence as the American flag found among the debris of the World Trade Center was brought into the stadium by eight US athletes flanked by New York police and firefighters.

The Olympic opening ceremony was a spectacular show with a local tradition as a prominent theme.

The closely guarded secret of who would light the Olympic flame was revealed, as America's 1980 gold medal-winning ice hockey team appeared.
