Red Star - Lazio 1-1, Slavia - Partizan 5-1

Branko Boskovic, scorer for Red Star

Belgrade, November 14 (AP) - Lazio drew 1-1 with Red Star of Belgrade on Thursday to advance to the third round of the UEFA Cup, going through 2-1 on aggregate.

The scoreless first half was marked with intense attempts by Red Star to smother Lazio's slender 1-0 lead from the first leg mach two weeks ago in Rome.

The Italians concentrated on defense at first, but Red Star's Branko Boskovic managed a spectacular header in the 70th, taking on a convenient free kick by teammate Ivan Gvozdenovic.

This galvanized Lazio into real action and brought an equalizer by Enrico Chiesa just seven minutes later, a spinning free kick that glided into Red Star's net directly, past helpless 'keeper Ivan Radjenovic.

Until the final whistle, Lazio deliberately dragged on the game while the Belgrade club's mostly young players tried desperately but seemed to lack precision.

"My players did their best, but Italians are Italians, simply great," said Red Star coach Zoran Filipovic, who has hoped to bring back restore some of the glory of the Belgrade club that won the Champions Cup in 1991.
