Azerbaijan - Serbia-Montenegro 2-1

Baku, AZERBAIJAN, June 11 (Reuters) - Azerbaijan shocked Serbia-Montenegro with two late goals to earn a 2-1 victory in their Euro 2004 Group Nine qualifier on Wednesday.

Serbia-Montenegro appeared to be cruising to a comfortable away win over the Group Nine outsiders, but Gurban Gurbanov levelled the score at 1-1 with an 88th-minute penalty before Samir Aliyev hit the winner in stoppage time.

Savicevic quits as coach of Serbia and Montenegro

Baku, AZERBAIJAN, June 11 (AFP) - Dejan Savicevic quit as coach of Serbia and Montenegro after his team's humiliating 2-1 Euro 2004 qualifying defeat against Azerbaijan in Baku, local media reported.

"It's all over, I resign," Savicevic was quoted as saying after the end of the Group Nine defeat which put an end to the team's hopes of making the finals in Portugal next year.

Savicevic, who left the field after Azerbaijan scored their second goal, said Serbia and Montenegro had "lost all chances to qualify" for Euro 2004, radio B92 reported.

"Those who play in the national league are unable to run for a full 90 minutes, while those playing abroad have reached the age when football can hardly be played," Savicevic was quoted as saying.

Savicevic,36, whose team lost 3-0 to Finland on Saturday, said that it was now up to the Serbia and Montenegro football federation to name the new coach, who "might be able to achieve something with a completely new squad" in the remaining qualifing matches against Italy and Wales.

"This is the most difficult moment in my career, what has happened to us is almost impossible," said former international Dragan Stojkovic, the head of the federation.

Branko Boskovic had put the Serbs ahead after 27 minutes.

It was Serbia & Montenegro's second defeat in four days after they lost 3-0 to Finland in Helsinki last Saturday.

The Azeris also shocked Serbia & Montenegro in February when they held them to a surprise 2-2 away draw to earn their first point in five qualifiers.

Wednesday's loss virtually ended Serbia & Montenegro's already fading hopes of reaching next year's finals in Portugal as they remain second from the bottom with five points from five matches.

Wales top the group with 12 points from four matches.

Italy and Finland, who meet later on Wednesday, are second and third with seven and six points.

Azerbaijan have four points from six matches, but remain bottom of the group.
