Association of Families of Missing and Kidnapped Persons mark Day of the Missing

Belgrade / Pristina / London, Sept 1, 2003 - The Association of Families of Missing and Kidnapped Persons from Kosovo-Metohija marked the Day of the Missing on Aug 30.

Addressing the meeting in the central Belgrade square, Association member Verica Tomanovic said that 1,303 persons have gone missing in the province, with 150 persons killed and another 364 released or escaped. A total of 789 persons are still unaccounted for, said Tomanovic.

UNMIK Office for Missing Persons and Forensics (OMPF) has called on all parties concerned to step up efforts to resolve the destiny of an estimated 4,000 missing persons in the province and bring the culprits to justice, said UNMIK.

Kosovo Albanian families have also called for revealing the fate of their missing family members.

Amnesty International said it is gravely concerned that more than 4,000 persons are still unaccounted for and that no one has been brought to justice four years after the Kosovo conflict ended.
