Partizan eliminate Newcastle on penalties

Newcastle, ENGLAND, August 27 (Reuters) - Partizan Belgrade claimed a shock place in the Champions League group stage at the expense of Newcastle United after winning a tense penalty shootout at St James' Park.

The champions of Serbia and Montenegro wiped out Newcastle's advantage from their 1-0 first-leg victory thanks to a second-half goal from striker Ivica Iliev and then completed the comeback with a 4-3 sudden-death victory on penalties on Wednesday.

Iliev put Partizan ahead on the night in the 50th minute, rounding off a lightning quick break out of defence following a Newcastle corner when he slotted home a pass from impressive captain Sasa Ilic.

In the shootout three players from each side, including Newcastle's normally lethal striker Alan Shearer, failed to convert.

When Newcastle's Aaron Hughes blasted his effort over, Partizan right back Milivoje Cirkovic put away the decisive spot kick to see his side through to the money-spinning Champions League and leave Newcastle facing UEFA Cup football.

Newcastle looked distinctly unimpressive in every area of the pitch and were only able to create one clear-cut chance in normal time which fell to Kieron Dyer seconds after Iliev's equaliser but he was thwarted by Ivica Kralj's smart save.

Partizan defended stoutly and looked increasingly threatening and ambitious in attack as the game progressed with Iliev going close from distance and Nikola Malbasa testing Shay Given with a shot from 18 metres.

In extra time Iliev went close but the best chance fell to Newcastle substitute Jermaine Jenas who headed wide from close range when Hughes delivered an inviting cross.

Then in the dying moments of the game goalkeeper Kralj used his legs to keep out a Shearer free kick which took a nasty deflection.

Kralj pulled off two fine saves during the penalty shoot-out to keep out efforts from Dyer and Jonathan Woodgate before Cirkovic applied the finishing touch to a memorable night for Partizan and their German coach Lothar Matthaeus.
