Serbia marks Statehood Day this weekend

Belgrade, Feb 13, 2004 - Life and Work of Immortal Vozd Karadjordje will premier at the Belgrade National Theatre on Saturday, Feb 14 at 19.00 to open a central celebration marking the 200th anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising and the creation of the modern Serbian state.

Serbian Minister of Culture and Media Branislav Lecic will address the audience prior to the premier of Serbia's first feature movie, whose copy was discovered at the Vienna film archives last year.

Following the movie premier, the Serbian government will organise a reception at the Serbian presidential building.

The ceremony will continue in Orasac on Sunday, Feb 15 at 12.00. As part of the second day of the celebration, acting Serbian President and Serbian parliament Speaker Dragan Marsicanin will unveil a monument to Karadjordje, with Crown Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic due to address those present.

The celebration will resume in the evening when Serbia-Montenegrin parliament Speaker Dragoljub Micunovic is due to welcome foreign and domestic guests for a dinner at the Belgrade Intercontinental Hotel.

A gala concert, themed Europe in Belgrade, will close the two-day central celebration at the Belgrade Sava Centre at 20.30, with Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic scheduled to address the audience.
