Serbian parliament amends election legislation

Belgrade, Feb 25, 2004 - The Serbian parliament has appointed a new governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), and the members to the central bank's council. At a session on Wednesday, the parliament also named new electoral commission and approved changes to several election laws.

The parliament adopted changes to the Law on the election of the president of the Republic of Serbia, scrapping a 50 percent turnover threshold for the first round of presidential elections.

The parliament also approved changes to the Law on the election of deputies to the Serbian parliament, scrapping a five percent threshold for parties of ethnic minorities.

The deputies named Radovan Jelasic as the new governor of NBS, after they cancelled last year's decision to appoint Kori Udovicki as the central bank's head.
